New Lighting for Now and into the Future

February 26, 2008

Make improvements to your lighting is one of the fastest ways to cut your energy bills. An average household dedicates 11% of its energy budget to lighting. Using new lighting technologies can reduce lighting energy use in your home by 50% to 75%. Advances in lighting controls offer further energy savings by reducing the amount of time lights are on but not being used.

Indoor Lighting

Use tube fluorescent and energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFL's) in fixtures throughout your home to provide high-quality and high efficiency lighting. Fluorescent lamps are much more efficient than incandescent (standard) bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. Today's CFL's offer brightness and color rendition that is comparable to incandescent lights. Although fluorscent and compact fluorescent lamps cost a bit more than incandescent bulbs, they pay for themselves by saving energy over their lifetime. CFL's fixtures are now available that feature dimmers and opearte much like incandescent fixtures.

Outdoor Lighting

Many homeowners use outdoor lighting for decoration and security. When shopping for outdoor lights, you will find a variety of products, from low-voltage pathway lighting to motion-detcor floodlights. Lights powered by small photovoltaic (PV) modules that convert sunlight directly into electricity; consider PV-powered lights for areas that are close to an existing power supply line. With solar-powered outdoor lighting you can gain energy independence from your power provider. You pay more up front to reduce the environmental impact of your electricity use. With alternative energy your system will be connected to the electricity grid and the enrgy provider in your area will buy any excess power you produce. Depending on the state, city, or utility service will offer rebates, tax credits or other incentives. To find out about your financial incentives contact EZ-Bey Electronic Industries,L.L.C.

LED Lighting

in the last 20 years, light-emitting diode (LED) lamps have advanced from being indicators on sonsumer electronics, to an increasingly versatile and efficient lighting sources. LED lighting has the potential to provide high efficiency, durability, and extremely long life. Currently, LED lighting is largely restricted to specialty uses such as accent lighting, LCD monitor backlighting, exit signs as well as use in traffic signals, vehicle brake lights, and strings of colored holiday lights. However, as the technology becomes more accepted in the market, its uses will expand and costs will become more competitive. A specific kind of LED, the organic light-emitting dioxide (OLED) promises to make energy efficient and designable light panels that can be used in a wide variety of architectural applications.
